Recently there has been news on mamavation.com about a study finding perfluoroalkyl substances (aka PFAS ‘forever chemicals’) in soft contact lenses. Whilst there are many variants of PFAS everywhere, including the body, some have been linked to health issues.
Of the 18 popular brands of contact lenses studied by mamavation.com, 8 of them has been suspected to have very high PFAS chemicals:
- Acuvue Oasys with HydraLuxe 1-Day
- Acuvue Vita Astigmatism Senofilcon C Brand Contact Lenses
- Alcon Air OPTIX (No Hydraglide) Soft Contact Lenses for Astigmatism
- Alcon AIR OPTIX Colors Contact Lenses with Smartshield Technology
- Alcon Dailies Colors One-Day Contact Lenses
- Alcon Total 30 Contact Lenses for Daily Wear
- Coopervision Biofinity Toric Contact Lenses
- Coopervision Comfilcon A Multifocal Tinted Soft Contact Lenses
Optometry Australia, the representative body for optometrists, raised a few questions about the validity of the claims. Also, some contact lens companies deny that their contact lenses contain harmful chemicals and are in the process of examining the report by mamaviation.
Whilst the investigation relating to these findings is under way, it is important to be reassured that the contact lenses have come a long way and have always been a very safe mode of vision correction. If you remain concerned about the findings, you may wish to discuss with one of our optometrists for a tailored advice.
